Note8
German defence planning is confused by the differing judgement of the
commanders.
Hitler as political and military head of the German nation insists that all
the coasts of France, Belgium, Holland and Norway are liable to attack
and therefore German forces must be spread out along the coasts to
stop the Allies obtaining a foothold.
Von Rundstedt, army C-in-C in the west, while defering to Hitler,
believes the Allies can't be prevented from landing at the Pas de Calais
and presses for an armoured reserve with which to throw them back.
Rommel, Commander of Army Group 'B', believes the Allies will land in
Normandy. As the Germans cannot reinforce because of Allied air power,
all availible forces
including armour must be put behind the beaches.
Compromise puts four armoured divisions under Hitler around Paris.
